Alpha
Hydroxy Acids (AHA) are fruit acids that aid in the
exfoliating of the skin. These acids, when used correctly,
have many benefits to the skin. Glycolic
Acid is one of the AHA's. It is derived from
sugar cane and can be produced synthetically.
Glycolic
Acid has the smallest molecular structure of all the
AHA's and therefore will penetrate the skin deeper
allowing for greater, faster exfoliation. Other potential
benefits are:
- Helps
reduce the surface skin oils;
- Helps
remove blackheads and other skin impurities;
- Smoothes
out fine lines;
- Moisturizes;
- Helps
bleach unwanted skin discoloration;
- Helps
draw other skin treatments more deeply into the skin;
- Helps
stimulate collagen production within the dermis to
some degree.
The
higher the percentage and the lower the pH the stronger
the acid. At Helen's
Haven we offer several glycolic products for home care
at a 10% strength. 8% glycolic acid has proven visible
results. When using AHA-containing products purchased
at the drug, grocery, or department store, the percentages
are generally going to be negligible with the average
AHA in the 3% range.
Professional
glycolic
acid peels done only in-clinic start at 30%
and can go up to 70%. These acid peels are for professional
use only. Call us for more information about these
peels.
If
you feel that your skin is looking dull, lifeless or
uneven, using a glycolic acid product may benefit you.
As the skin ages, it can lose that lustrous youthful
glow. Using glycolic acid can quickly restore a fresh,
healthy appearance.
