Causes of a Sagging Chin and How to Prevent It

April 15 2022
As years go by you might start to notice some things that were once tight and firm are starting to get loose and saggy. One very common area to experience sagging as we grow older is under the chin. Today we will talk about what causes a sagging chin, some things you can do to help prevent it, and a simple treatment to reverse this condition if it’s already become a problem for you.

What Causes a Sagging Chin?

There are three main causes of a sagging chin. One is excessive weight gain. The natural aging process is another, and then there’s genetics. A sagging chin is simply a layer of fat that sags down your neck. This often creates the appearance of a double chin. Excessive weight gain causes this layer of fat to enlarge. Sometimes losing weight will correct the sagging, but sometimes even when you lose weight your chin still sags because the skin has been stretched. The natural aging process causes skin all over the body to lose elasticity, and as the skin under your chin loosens gravity will pull it downward. And just as genetics determines your eye and hair color it can also determine whether your chin is prone to sagging or not. If your parents and grandparents have a saggy chin, chances are you eventually will as well.

What Can Prevent a Saggy Chin?

While you can’t really do much about your genetics, there are a couple of things that you can do to help prevent your chin from sagging. The first way to prevent this is by maintaining a healthy weight. If you keep your weight under control the pad of fat under your chin is less likely to enlarge and sag in the first place. The second thing you can do is chin firming exercises such as the chin lift and the neck roll.

What If My Chin Is Already Sagging?

If your chin is already sagging, you can try diet and exercises to tighten and firm the skin, but if those are not effective enough on their own you can turn to Kybella treatments. Kybella is a safe and effective injectable treatment that destroys fat cell walls in the treated area allowing your body’s natural processes to absorb, digest, and eliminate those cells from your body, for good.
