Dispelling Common Myths About Facial Waxing

December 31 2022
Are you one of the 1 in 20 women that deal with unwanted facial hair? If so you’ve no doubt tried many different ways to remove the hair with varying successes and failures. There are shelves filled with products intended to address this issue in every drugstore. You can find everything from electric razors and epilators to chemical creams, bleaches, and microwave wax kits. They all promise smooth, hair-free skin, but many of them simply don’t work, while others are not very effective or cause unpleasant side effects. The fact is that the best facial hair removal method by far is professional facial waxing. Sadly many women avoid this amazing hair removal option because of several myths about the service. We’re here today to share some facts about facial waxing and dispel some of the myths you might have heard.

Facial Waxing Myth #1- Facial waxing stretches your skin and causes wrinkles.

TRUTH: Facial waxing is good for your skin and can help improve your skin’s elasticity and texture. The esthetician holds your skin very taut while removing the wax strips, so it’s impossible for your skin to stretch. However, the exfoliation action of the wax removing the outer layer of dead skin cells along with the hair stimulates the production of collagen, the substance that gives your skin structure and elasticity that prevents sagging and wrinkles.

Facial Waxing Myth #2- Waxing your facial hair will make it grow back thicker and darker.

TRUTH: This same myth has also been circulating about shaving for many years. The fact is that there is nothing about any hair removal method that will make your hair grow back thicker and darker. It’s simply not possible. What waxing could do to your hair is to cause it to grow back finer and more sparse over time due to the damage to your hair follicles. So the worst case scenario post-waxing is that your hair grows back exactly the same as it was before you waxed it. The best-case scenario is that your hair grows back lighter and thinner post-waxing.

Facial Waxing Myth #3- You have to grow your hair out very long before you can wax again.

TRUTH: You do not have to walk around for weeks with stubble a half-inch long in order to wax again. Hairs only need to be about ¼ inch long in order for the wax to be able to adhere to and remove it. That much regrowth is barely noticeable and can be bleached or hidden with makeup if need be before your next facial waxing appointment. Truth is that you don’t want to wait too long between waxes as it allows the hair follicles time to heal, making your next waxing session more difficult and uncomfortable. Your waxing schedule will be based on your own personal hair growth patterns, but a general rule of thumb is to plan on a facial wax about once per month to keep your face beautifully smooth and hair free.

Facial Waxing Myth #4- Facial waxing is incredibly painful.

TRUTH: It is true that all waxing comes with a certain degree of discomfort. Most methods of hair removal do. Waxing does remove hair by pulling out the roots, so some discomfort is to be expected, but facial waxing discomfort is minimal and momentary. Your esthetician is well-trained in waxing techniques to make your facial waxing session as comfortable as possible. The results that last for weeks make it well worth that brief moment of slight discomfort. And when you follow a consistent waxing schedule your hair follicles will weaken over time and release the hair more easily making your facial waxing sessions more and more comfortable with time.
