Dermal fillers, often called "fillers," are a popular injectable treatment used to restore lost volume, smooth lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. Unlike neuromodulators like Botox, which relax muscles to prevent wrinkles, fillers physically add volume. This makes them ideal for treating static wrinkles (visible even at rest) and age-related volume loss.
How fillers work
Replacing volume: As we age, collagen, elastin, and fat pads decrease, causing the face to lose structure. Fillers replace this lost volume, lifting and smoothing the skin.
Stimulating collagen: Some fillers not only add volume but also trigger natural collagen production, creating longer-lasting firmness and elasticity.
Types of fillers
Hyaluronic Acid (HA): Naturally found in the body, helps keep skin plump and hydrated. Great for lips, cheeks, smile lines, and under eyes. Brands: Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero, RHA. Lasts 6-18 months. Reversible.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA): Thicker consistency, used for deeper wrinkles and contouring (cheeks, jawline). Brand: Radiesse. Lasts 12-18 months. Not reversible.
Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA): A collagen stimulator with gradual, natural results. Brand: Sculptra. Lasts 2+ years.
What to expect
Filler treatments are quick and done in-office. A numbing cream may be applied for comfort. Mild, temporary side effects may include swelling, bruising, redness, or tenderness at the injection site.
